Lexington County Community Remembrance Project

The Lexington County Community Remembrance Project (LCCRP) is a growing coalition working to remember the victims of racial terror lynchings in Lexington County, South Carolina. Working under the mentorship of the Equal Justice Initiative, we are seeking to engage community members in education, reflection, and discussion so that the past is not forgotten.

In the News

In March 2022, the Emmett Till Antilynching Act became a federal law, designating lynching as a hate crime. There have been efforts to pass antilynching laws for over a century, starting in 1900. The law is named after Emmett Till, a 14 year-old boy who was killed in 1955. His killers were quickly acquitted and never held responsible. This law communicates the importance of recognizing the history of violence against African Americans in the United States. However, it is not just a symbolic law to honor the past. Violence against African Americans continues today, and it is imperative that laws like this are in place to fight racialized violence in our country. To learn more about the law, click here.
